Ryan S. Sultan, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and director of the Sultan Lab for Mental Health Informatics. His research examines psychiatric treatment, substance use, and youth mental health. He practices adult and child and adolescent psychiatry in New York City.

Ryan S. Sultan, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and director of the Sultan Lab for Mental Health Informatics. His research examines psychiatric treatment, substance use, and youth mental health. He practices adult and child and adolescent psychiatry in New York City. He combines clinical practice with research using national surveys, administrative claims, and electronic health records. His publications examine antipsychotic prescribing among young people with ADHD, psychiatric comorbidity, and adolescent cannabis use. He also collaborates on clinical informatics and digital intervention research. Sultan is board-certified in psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. He earned his medical degree at Drexel University, completed psychiatry residency at Emory University, and trained in child and adolescent psychiatry at NewYork-Presbyterian across Columbia and Weill Cornell. He is Medical Director of Integrative Psych in Manhattan, where he provides psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and psychotherapy. His research and clinical work inform his public writing and interviews about mental health.

Research for reporting

In our 2026 Pediatrics study, cannabis-use frequency was associated with academic and emotional functioning among adolescents. I am the first author. The cross-sectional design limits causal interpretation. Read the original study.
